The earliest possible known observation was by Hipparchus , who in 128 BC might have recorded it as a star for his star catalogue that was later incorporated into Ptolemy 's Almagest . [26]

Source: Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Basically, ring (or ring) galaxies were normal disc-shaped galaxies that deformed after a collision with a small galaxy billions of years ago.

He believed Andromeda to be the nearest of all the "great nebulae", and based on the color and magnitude of the nebula, he incorrectly guessed that it was no more than 2,000 times the distance of Sirius, or roughly 18,000 ly (5.5 kpc).
