  5. William Howard, 1st Viscount Stafford, FRS (30 November 1614 – 29 December 1680) was the youngest son of Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel, and his wife, the former Alethea Talbot. A Fellow of the Royal Society from 1665, he was a Royalist supporter before being falsely implicated by Titus Oates in the later discredited " Popish Plot ", and executed for treason .

The sister of Henry Lord Stafford (died 1637) was married to William Howard, second surviving son of Thomas Earl of Arundel and Altheia daughter and co-heir of Gilbert Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury. In 1640 they were created Baron and Baroness Stafford in their own right, with remainder to heirs general and also William was created Viscount Stafford (descent via heirs male).
