In 1603 his eldest son and heir apparent William Howard (1577–1615), was summoned to the House of Lords through a writ of acceleration in his father's junior title of Baron Howard of Effingham. He predeceased his father.

William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham (c. 1510 – 12 January 1573) was an English diplomat and military leader. He served four monarchs, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I, in various official capacities, most notably on diplomatic missions and as Lord Admiral and Lord Chamberlain of the Household .

Lord William, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham was the fourth son of Thomas Howard, the second Howard Duke of Norfolk and the oldest son by his second wife. He was born in about 1510 at the beginning of the reign of King Henry VIII, some four years before his father was reinstated as Duke of Norfolk.
