13 de nov. de 2011 · William Howe, commander in chief of the British army in North America during the War of Independence, was born on August 10, 1729, the third surviving son of Emanuel Scrope Howe, 2nd Viscount Howe, and his wife Mary Sophia Charlotte, the daughter of Johann Adolph von Kielmansegg. William entered the British army as a cornet of dragoons in 1746.

William Howe served under James Wolfe at Quebec in 1759, led British forces at Bunker Hill in 1775 and succeeded Thomas Gage as commander-in-chief in America. Working with his brother, Rear Admiral Richard Howe, he led successful assaults on Long Island, White Plains, and Forts Washington and Lee.
