William Maxwell Evarts (February 6, 1818 – February 28, 1901) was an American lawyer and statesman from New York who served as U.S. Secretary of State, U.S. Attorney General and U.S. Senator from New York.

Evarts studied law privately before attending Harvard Law School for one year. He then joined a law office in New York City in 1839, and in 1841 he was admitted to the bar. From 1849 to 1852, Evarts served as the assistant U.S. district attorney for the Southern District of New York.
If Evarts is remembered at all today, it is primarily by legal historians for his 1891 sponsorship, while U. S. Senator, of the law that came to be known as the Evarts Act and created the modern federal court system.
