William Maitland of Lethington (1525 – 9 June 1573) was a Scottish politician and reformer, and the eldest son of poet Richard Maitland. [1] Life. He was educated at the University of St Andrews. [2] William was the renowned "Secretary Lethington" to Mary, Queen of Scots.

William Maitland was at the heart of the Reformation in Scotland, and was a convinced reformer himself, but served a Catholic Regent and a Catholic Queen. This created many tensions in a world where religious conformity was regarded by all as an essential part of the political structure.

Maitland of Lethington began his career in the service of Mary of Guise, regent for Mary, queen of Scots, but in 1559 denounced the French alliance and urged an understanding with the English. His embassy to Elizabeth resulted in the treaty of Berwick in 1560.
