The History of William Marshal is the earliest surviving biography of a medieval knight - indeed it is the first biography of a layman in the vernacular in European history. Composed in verse in the 1220s just a few years after his death, it is a major primary source not simply for its subject's life but for the exceptionally stormy period he had had to navigate.
WILLIAM MARSHAL (II) (died 1231) The first of the five sons of William Marshal (I) who in turn became earls of Pembroke. In 1220 his domain in Dyfed was attacked by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth who had complained of the inroads made by the earl's tenants on the Welsh in spite of the truce. On appeal to the king a settlement was concluded.

Hace 6 días · Richard honoured his father's promise and in August 1189, at the age of 43, William married the 17-year-old daughter and heiress of Richard de Clare 'Strongbow', Earl of Pembroke, the conqueror of Ireland and Marshal acquired large estates and claims in England, Wales, Normandy and Ireland. The marriage was to produce 10 children.
