William Seymour, 3rd Duke of Somerset (17 April 1652 – 12 December 1671) was the son of Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp, and Mary Capell. As both his father and two elder uncles had predeceased him, he succeeded to the dukedom on the death of his grandfather William Seymour.
William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset (1588–1660), great-grandson of the 1st Duke through the 1st Duke's third son, Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford, and a Cavalier, was rewarded with restoration to the dukedom soon after the Stuart Restoration
The Dukedom of Somerset remained under attainder until 1660, when the title was restored to the 1st Duke's great-grandson, William Seymour, 2nd Earl of Hertford later 1st Marquess of Hertford later 2nd Duke of Somerset.
In September 1660 Hertford secured a private act of Parliament establishing his claim as duke of Somerset. He therefore died at the end of October as 2 nd duke of Somerset, and William Seymour succeeded as 3 rd duke.
Seymour, Semel or St. Maur, is the name of an English family in which several titles of nobility have from time to time been created, and of which the Duke of Somerset is the head. Origins [ edit] The family was settled in Monmouthshire in the 13th century.
