Ensuring that World Heritage sites sustain their outstanding universal value is an increasingly challenging mission in today’s complex world, where sites are vulnerable to the effects of uncontrolled urban development, unsustainable tourism practices, neglect, natural calamities, pollution, political instability, and conflict.
The World Heritage Convention ("Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage") [1] is a United Nations treaty. It governs how World Heritage Sites are selected and protected. Nations that have agreed to the treaty elect 21 countries to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. [2] That committee sets the list of sites.
28 de ene. de 2023 · Rule 13 of the Rules of Procedure of the General Assembly foresees that “the Secretariat shall ask all States Parties, at least three months prior to the opening of the General Assembly, whether they intend to stand for election to the World Heritage Committee” and that “ the list of candidates shall be finalized 48 hours before the opening of the General Assembly”.
