Who We Are - Abbey of Gethsemani. A School of the Lord's Service. We are a community of about 40 Trappist monks located about an hour drive from Louisville, Kentucky. Trappists have lived, prayed, and worked in this house of the Lord – the proto-abbey of North America – for over 170 years.
Set in the rolling hills of central Kentucky, Gethsemani Abbey was the monastic home of Thomas Merton—writer, theologian, mystic, poet, and social activist.
