The Adams-Onís Treaty, also known as the Florida Purchase Treaty or Transcontinental Treaty, was a bilateral agreement between the United States and the Spanish Empire in 1819 that ceded Florida to the US and defined the boundary between the US and New Spain.
The resulting treaty, known as the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819 (named after John Quincy Adams and the Spanish Minister Luis de Onís), was hailed as a great success, although some detractors thought that Adams should have obtained Texas in the bargain. On another diplomatic front, Adams negotiated two important accords with Great Britain
