Born a quarteron in Villers-Cotterêts near Paris, Dumas' grandfather was the Marquis Antoine-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, and his grandmother was Marie-Céssette Dumas, a Black slave from Jérémie, Saint-Domingue ( Haiti ).
