Durante el tour "Rock in Río" de 1991, Michael conoció al brasileño Anselmo Feleppa, con quien inició una relación. Pero Feleppa fue diagnosticado de sida, y Michael empezó a sentirse deprimido. Feleppa falleció en 1993 de una hemorragia cerebral causada por el sida.
