31 de ene. de 2023 · In late January, 1921, all occupants of the schooner Carroll A. Deering disappeared somewhere in the waters along the North Carolina coast. The ship was still in good condition when it was spotted from Cape Hatteras on January 31, 1921, before it was torn apart on the Diamond Shoals.
On August 26, 1920, the Deering cleared the Virginia Capes bound for Rio, but Captain Merritt soon fell seriously ill and the Deering turned back and put into the port of Lewes, Delaware to drop off Merritt and his son.

In late January 1921, less than two years after her maiden voyage, the Maine schooner Carroll A. Deering ran aground on Diamond Shoals off of North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras. The Deering was on a return run up the East Coast after delivering a load of coal to Brazil.
