But Arnold’s father, who had settled in Norwich, Connecticut, proved to be a drunkard; only after his son moved to New Haven could he begin to free himself from the ignominy of his childhood.

In 1780 he offered to surrender West Point to the British, and he led a British attack on New London, Connecticut, in 1781.
