The Great Bell, or Big Ben, was made in 1856 in a nearby factory. It took 16 horses to pull it to Parliament. The bell cracked when it was first tested. It was replaced with the present Big Ben in 1859. No one is sure how the bell got its name, but one story says that it was named for Sir Benjamin Hall, a large man who was in charge of the works.
