Unlike jazz, the blues didn’t spread out significantly from the South until the 1920s and ’30s. Once the Delta blues made its way up the Mississippi to urban areas, the music evolved into other regional blues styles and various jazz-blues hybrids. A decade or so later, the blues gave birth to rhythm and blues (R&B) and rock and roll.
Blues stands as the trunk of the American music tree. It grew from the roots of older, primarily African American, elements and branched into virtually every form of American music. There is a strong blues presence in jazz, rock, country, bluegrass, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, and hip-hop music to this day.
Blues music was the first significant form of secular music created by African American ex-slaves in the deep South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Growing out of earlier black spirituals, work songs, field hollers, and dance music, the blues addressed the social experiences of the ex-slaves as they struggled to establish themselves in post–Reconstruction southern culture.
