Australopithecus boisei. Peninj mandible, an almost perfectly preserved fossil jaw of the hominin (of human lineage) species Paranthropus boisei containing a complete set of adult teeth. It was found in 1964 at Peninj, a locale in Tanzania to the west of Lake Natron and about 80 km (50 miles) from Olduvai Gorge, a major paleoanthropological site.

The genus Paranthropus currently includes three species, Paranthropus boisei, Paranthropus robustus, and Paranthropus aethiopicus. They are collectively known as the ‘robusts’ because of their extremely large jaws and molar teeth. They are our distant ‘cousins’ rather than our direct relatives.

KNM-ER 406 is a nearly complete adult male Paranthropus boisei.It has the facial and cranial features typical of the species such as massive cheek teeth, and the widely flaring zygomatic arches with a forward placed connection to the other facial bones, and large cheek bones supported powerful chewing muscles - the latter two features giving it a "dish-shaped" face.
23 de dic. de 2011 · Según todos los datos reunidos el boisei derivaría de aethiopicus y vivió entre 2,3 y 1,2 millones de años (períodos Gelasiense y Calabrense) junto a especies como Homo habilis y rudolfensis. Estaba adaptado a vivir en un medio ambiente abierto y seco, si bien sus restos aparecen a orillas de ríos y lagos salados.
Paranthropus boisei es una especie de homínido extinta de África Oriental, que vivió en un entorno seco y se alimentaba de vegetales duros, para lo que desarrolló un potente aparato masticador destinado a triturar semillas y raíces. Aparece en el registro fósil en sedimentos del Pleistoceno inferior, de hace entre 2,3 (Gelasiense) y 1,3 millones de años (Calabriense).
