Continental Regiments. List of Flags during the American Revolutionary War from 1775-1883. The early days of the American Revolution led to the use of many flags as the colonists struggled with the aims of the revolt, whether rights within the British Empire or outright independence.
All during the American Revolution, the British fought the Americans under the British Red Ensign Flag and at the end of the Revolutionary War, General Charles Cornwallis surrendered under this flag as well.

Design and analysis. The USS Alfred flew the flag for the first recorded time on December 3, 1775, when it was hoisted by Senior Lieutenant John Paul Jones. The design for the flag was based in part on the Red Ensign used in British America and the Thirteen Colonies.

Retaining the British Union in the canton indicated a continued loyalty, as the Americans saw it, to the constitutional government against which they fought. On January 1,1776, this flag was first raised on Prospect Hill in Charlestown, Massachusetts.
