The British nobility in the narrow sense consists of members of the immediate families of peers who bear courtesy titles or honorifics. Members of the peerage carry the titles of duke , marquess , earl , viscount or baron .

The peerage comprises five ranks, which are, in descending order, duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron.

Until 1999, peers were entitled to sit in the House of Lords and exempted from jury duty. Titles may be hereditary or granted for life.
The five ranks of nobility are listed here in order of precedence: Duke (from the Latin dux, leader). This is the highest and most important rank. Since its inception in the 14th century, there have been fewer than 500 dukes. Currently there are just 27 dukedoms in the peerage, held by 24 different people.
