During Charles’ absences, Lucy had relationships with other men, including an Irish nobleman Theobald Taaffe, 2nd Viscount Taaffe who is likely the father of Lucy Walter’s second child Mary, born in Paris in 1651. Charles ended his affair with Lucy in 1651 but Lucy refused to accept this and even claimed that she was married to him.
In 1648, described as ‘of no good fame, but handsome’, Lucy caught the attention of the eighteen-year-old Prince of Wales (later Charles II), who was at The Hague. On the 9 April 1649, their son, James , the future Duke of Monmouth , was born in Rotterdam and recognised by Charles as his natural son.In later life, James claimed that his parents had married, but this was denied by the crown.
None of this was a secret. None of this was denied by anyone, only their marriage was hotly denied – by all whose future wealth, power and position depended on it.
