Charles II of Spain (6 November 1661 – 1 November 1700) was King of Spain from 1665 to 1700. The last monarch from the House of Habsburg , which had ruled Spain since 1516, neither of his marriages produced children, and he died without a direct heir.

Charles’s reign opened with a 10-year regency under the queen mother, during which the government was preoccupied with combatting the ambitions of the French king Louis XIV in the Low Countries.

King Charles II of Spain suffered from numerous physical and cognitive disabilities due to generations of inbreeding, and since his genetics seemingly rendered him infertile as well, the Spanish Habsburg dynasty came to an end when he died in 1700.

In the 17th century the greatest threat had come from a land power, France, jealous of Habsburg power in Europe; in the 18th it was to come from a sea power, England, while the Austrian Habsburgs became the main continental enemy of Spain.
Charles II was the last Spanish ruler from the House of Habsburg. He is regarded as a grotesque reflection of Spain’s decline and a prototypical product of dynastic inbreeding.
Charles II of Spain (b. November 1661; d. 1 November 1700), king of Spain, Naples, and Sicily (1665–1700). Chronically ill throughout his life, Charles II ruled early on through his mother, as regent, and a five-member government junta, which was an aristocratic faction headed by his illegitimate brother, Don John of Austria .
