  2. The cathedral was founded in the early 11th century under the Viking king Sitric Silkenbeard. It was rebuilt in stone in the late 12th century under the Norman potentate Strongbow, and considerably enlarged in the early 13th century, using Somerset stones and craftsmen.

  3. 2 de ene. de 2024 · Christ Church Cathedral was founded in the early 11th century under the Viking king Sitruic Silkenbeard (amazingly, that is his real name!). Originally built as a wooden structure in 1030 with the help of an Irish priest, it was rebuilt in stone in 1172.

Its tower has stood tall watching while Dublin has established, evolved and emerged as a vibrant European city. Its walls have witnessed ten centuries of Irish history.

Four years before St. Louis was chartered as a city in 1823, Christ Church was organized by 26 people who assembled for a service in a building that previously had been a dance hall and a courtroom. That worship service on Oct. 24, 1819, was the first for an Episcopal-Anglican congregation west of the Mississippi River.
