To me, this photograph of two of the 20th century’s most iconic men, by then well past their prime, is one of the saddest I have ever seen.
Christiaan Neethling Barnard, who made medical history and was thrust into the international limelight almost instantly in 1967 after performing the first human heart transplant, died on September 2, 2001, in his hotel room while vacationing at the coastal resort of Paphos, Cyprus.

Christiaan N. Barnard nació el 8 de noviembre de 1922 en Beaufort West, Sudáfrica, hijo de Adam Barnard y Elizabeth de Sewart. Hizo sus estudios en la Universidad de Cape Town, donde se graduó como médico en 1948. Después de un corto período como médico familiar en Ceres, culminó en 1953 su doctorado en medicina en la misma universidad.
