The church gradually evolved out of the first arrival of Christians in England, which began during the Roman era in second or third centuries. The church itself claims it began with the Pope sending Augustine of Canterbury to England in 597 to convert the recently arrived Angles.
This chapter describes the emergence of the Church of England from its creation by Henry VIII in 1534 until the death of Edward VI in 1553, but also glances back to the earlier development of English Protestantism.
