In 1584, Lord Deputy of Ireland Sir John Perrott created six counties in Ulster, based largely on the boundaries of existing lordships; four of the six are now Northern Ireland: Armagh, Coleraine, Fermanagh, and Tyrone.

There are nine counties in Ulster. Three of them are in the Republic of Ireland : County Cavan. County Donegal. County Monaghan. The other six counties make up all of Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom : County Antrim. County Armagh. County Down. County Fermanagh. County Londonderry. County Tyrone.
Close. It is the second-largest (after Munster) and second-most populous (after Leinster) of Ireland's four traditional provinces, with Belfast being its biggest city. Unlike the other provinces, Ulster has a high percentage of Protestants, making up almost half of its population. English is the main language and Ulster English the main dialect.
