Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (30 November [ O.S. 19 November] 1719 – 8 February 1772) [1] was Princess of Wales by marriage to Frederick, Prince of Wales, eldest son and heir apparent of King George II.
Princess of Wales (Welsh: Tywysoges Cymru) is a title used since the 14th century by the wife of the Prince of Wales. The princess is a likely future queen consort, as the prince of Wales is a title reserved for the heir apparent to the British throne (and earlier in history the English throne).

A queen dowager or dowager queen (compare: princess dowager or dowager princess) is a title or status generally held by the widow of a king. In the case of the widow of an emperor, the title of empress dowager is used.
Augusta was the daughter of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Magdalena Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst. She married Frederick, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of George II who died in 1757 before becoming King. Augusta's role as collector or patron is perhaps most notable in portraiture.
In 1807, George III granted her permission to flee to England and upon her return Augusta resided with her daughter, the Princess of Wales, at Montagu House, Blackheath, until moving to Brunswick House. Augusta, the Dowager Duchess of Brunswick, never returned to the continent and died in London in 1813.
