Malcolm Ian Sinclair, 20th Earl of Caithness, PC (born 3 November 1948), is a Scottish Conservative politician and member of the House of Lords as one of the remaining hereditary peers. He is also 20th Lord Berriedale, 15th Baronet, of Canisbay, Co. Caithness, and chief of Clan Sinclair .
John Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Caithness was killed in an expedition to Orkney in 1529. In 1528-29 there had been insurrection led by the brothers James Sinclair and Edward Sinclair who were from the Orkney Isles against William, Lord Sinclair who himself had wasted Orkney and Shetland the previous year. CLAIR, EARL OF ORKNEY, obtained a grant of the Earldom of Caithness in 1455 from James II. He was the first of this family who enjoyed the dignity.
The present earl is a direct descendant of both Thorstein and Sigurd who acquired the earldom in 871 after defeating Constantine. Caithness also included Sutherland until the murder of John, the 24th Earl, in 1231 when it became detached from Orkney and Caithness.
