Historians have characterised the mid-Victorian era (1850–1870) as Britain's 'Golden Years', with national income per person increasing by half. This prosperity was driven by increased industrialisation, especially in textiles and machinery, along with exports to the empire and elsewhere.

Strictly speaking, the Victorian era began in 1837 and ended with Queen Victoria's death in 1901, but the period can be stretched to include the years both before and after these dates, roughly from the Napoleonic Wars until the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Questions to discuss. Does technological advance mean the same thing as progress?
Georgian and Victorian Britain saw, arguably, more extraordinary intellectual progress than any previous age since ancient Greece. The advances achieved in science, technology, engineering and medicine were staggering. This was an age that changed the way human life was perceived.
