    The epithet is applied after his death, in the 10th century. It was to distinguish him, probably, from another King Edward, King Edward the Martyr, who reigned later in the 10th century.

Edward was twice married, but it is possible that his eldest son Athelstan was the son of a mistress.   3. Meanwhile, all was about to change when on 26th October 899, King Alfred the Great passed away leaving Edward as the next in line. All however was not plain sailing for the young royal as Edward’s accession to the throne did not go unchallenged.

  4. In 924 Mercian nobles wanting to be free of Edward's rule made an alliance with the Welsh. Edward quickly put down the rebellion and placed a garrison in the town of Chester. But this expedition proved to be his last. Edward died 17 July 924. Before the end of the year his son Athelstan was recognized as the rightful king.
