She became one of the first Black nurses in the Army Nurse Corp. Apparently Black Army nurses were not good enough to nurse white army personnel, so they were sent to POW camps, to nurse captured Germans. It was at the POW camp near Florence, Arizona, USA that she met Frederich Karl Albert, a German POW.
Frederich as a POW was deported from the USA in 1946, back to Germany, what were they going to do, Frederich and Elinor were desperate to stay together, did the only thing they could think of, she conceived a child, unwed, Elinor hid her pregnancy through her final months of Army service, then returned to Massachusetts to give birth.
