He was the brother of Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife, and the younger brother of Somerset, protector to the young Edward VI. His spectacular rise began with his sister's marriage in May 1536.

Her relationship with the Lord Admiral has been romantically shown but if the report by Kat Ashley, the only source for the allegations of abuse are to be believed, it was one of grooming, not a consensual sexual relationship.
