A Franciscan abbey, founded about 1242, is a national monument. Ennis, on the main road between Limerick and Galway, is the principal rail and road.

Lying on the River Fergus, Ennis is considered a rare example of a Gaelic medieval town without defensive walls. It is also the birthplace of the famous “Siege of Ennis” polka dance.
