After Darnley orchestrated the murder of Mary's Italian secretary and close friend, David Rizzio, their marriage soured. In February 1567, Darnley's residence was destroyed by an explosion, and he was found murdered in the nearby garden.

So when he died on February 10, 1567, under mysterious circumstances – he was discovered strangled in an orchard after the house he was supposed to be in exploded – people were quick to point the finger at Mary and the man they claimed to be her lover, the Earl of Bothwell.

In need of money, it was said they tried to pawn some of her jewels in Edinburgh for 2,000 English marks, but no-one would lend this sum.
