George was born in Norfolk House in St James's Square, London, on 4 June 1738. [c] He was a grandson of King George II and the eldest son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha.

At the time of his birth, he was second in line to the throne after his father. George began his education at the age of six years. He was educated with his brother Edward who was a year younger.
