At shows in Rome these exhibitions became wildly popular and increased in size from three pairs at the first known exhibition in 264 BCE to 300 pairs in the time of Julius Caesar (died 44 BCE).

They fought before the public in hugely popular organised games held in large purpose-built arenas throughout the Roman Empire from 105 BCE to 404 CE (official contests).
Gladiators belonged to the infame class, infamous, and as such their lives were forfeit and belonged to their masters. Gladiatorial schools were incredibly strict, and the training they provided was harsh, with some archaeological evidence suggesting that gladiators could be killed as punishment for misbehavior.
