She was the oldest child and daughter of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra. The birth was difficult, and Alexandra was in labour for 13 hours.

Her parents, Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna —not to mention all of Russia—had hoped for a male heir to the Russian throne. And they certainly weren't thrilled with the announcement of another Grand Duchess.
Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna was the third daughter and middle child of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, and 1913 was the tercentennial year of her family’s dynastic rule—the last full year before the outbreak of World War I.
As such, Nicholas' heir was his brother George unless he had a son. Grand Duchess Tatiana's siblings were Grand Duchesses Olga, Maria, Anastasia, and Tsarevich Alexei of Russia.
