Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine. The Grand Duchy of Hesse ( German: Großherzogtum Hessen) was a former state that existed in modern-day Germany. It was formed in 1806 after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire as a result of the actions of Napoleon, who then elevated the former Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt to the level of grand duchy.

Two branches died out in the seventeenth century; the nineteenth-century descendants of the dynasty ruled until 1866 in the Electorate of Hesse- Kassel, and in the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt until 1918.

9 de dic. de 2013 · The Grand Duchy of Hesse was formerly named [Grand Duchy of] Hesse-Darmstadt (1816-1866). After 1866, when Prussia annexed Hesse-Kassel, it was named Hesse.
