Early life. Louis was born at the Prinz-Karl-Palais in Darmstadt, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine in the German Confederation, the first son and child of Prince Charles of Hesse and by Rhine (23 April 1809 – 20 March 1877) and Princess Elisabeth of Prussia (18 June 1815 – 21 March 1885), granddaughter of King Frederick William II of Prussia.
Grand Duchy of Hesse, May 14, 1829. The first U.S. Consulate to open in the Grand Duchy of Hesse was on May 14, 1829, which closed on August 29, 1872. There was a U.S. Consulate in Hessen-Romberg, which opened on January 23, 1854 and closed on August 15, 1861.

Rulers of Hesse. This is a list of monarchs of Hesse ( German: Hessen) during the history of Hesse on west-central Germany. These monarchs belonged to a dynasty collectively known as the House of Hesse and the House of Brabant, [1] originally the Reginar. Hesse was ruled as a landgraviate, electorate and later as a grand duchy until 1918.
The Electorate of Hesse (Hesse-Kassel) was annexed by Prussia in 1866, while the Grand Duchy of Hesse (Hesse-Darmstadt) remained a sovereign realm until the end of the German monarchies in 1918. Since 23 May 2013, the head of the house has been Donatus, Landgrave of Hesse.

Grand Duchy of Hesse–United States relations. The Grand Duchy of Hesse and the United States began relations in 1829 with mutual recognition going through expansion in 1868 when the Duchy joined the German Empire in 1871. Relations would eventually end with World War I when the U.S. declared war on Germany .
