I considered that he might have stolen the money before he left Chile, but the look of disgust he gave Tio when Tio was pissing in the pool shows that he had the sort of upbringing that taught him how to look down his nose at distasteful people.

Sometime during the 1980s, Gus fled Chile and in 1986 settled in Mexico with Max (" Hermanos "); he was also somehow able to almost completely erase all records of his existence in Chile, as Hank Schrader mentions that there are no records of him ever living there, implying that he may be a wanted fugitive or a war criminal (" Hermanos ").
