Hanover ( / ˈhænoʊvər, - nəv -/ HAN-oh-vər, HAN-ə-vər; German: Hannover [haˈnoːfɐ] ⓘ; Low German: Hannober) is the capital and largest city of the German state of Lower Saxony. Its 535,932 (2021) population makes it the 13th-largest city in Germany as well as the fourth-largest city in northern Germany after Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen.

Hanover (German: Hannover) is a territory that was at various times a principality within the Holy Roman Empire, an Electorate within the same, an independent Kingdom, and a subordinate Province within the Kingdom of Prussia.
From the 17th Century to the 19th Century. It was in the 17th century that the town acquired its connections with royalty, when in 1636, the Duke of Calenberg decided to move his residence here. Later, it became known as the Duchy of Hanover. In 1708, history remembers how the city rose in status, becoming the Electorate of Brunswick-Luneberg.

The city of Hannover was first established in the 9th century as a fortified settlement. The first recorded mention of the city was in the year 851, when it was referred to as "Hannovere" in a document from the Emperor Louis the Pious.
