Henrietta Maria had given birth to two healthy children: Charles, the Prince of Wales in May 1630 and Mary, the Princess Royal in November 1631.

On 1 May 1625 Charles was married by proxy to the 15-year-old French princess Henrietta Maria in front of the doors of Notre Dame de Paris. He had seen her in Paris while en route to Spain.
