Several of his children died soon after birth; his affair with a mistress also produced a son, Henry Fitzroy, who died at age 17.

[1] [nb 1] His father was William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy who had invaded England in 1066 to become the king of England, establishing lands stretching into Wales.

His mother was Elizabeth Blount, a lady-in-waiting of Catherine of Aragon. Although there were many suspected illegitimate children, he only officially recognized one.
