Hertford County, located in North Carolina's Coastal Plain region and partially bordering the state of Virginia, was formed from Bertie, Chowan, and Northampton Counties in 1759. The county took its name from Francis Seymour Conway, earl and later marquis of Hertford.
Hertford County is located in the northeastern region of North Carolina, bordering Virginia to the north. The county lies 55 miles southwest of Norfolk, 105 miles southeast of Richmond and 120 miles northeast of the state capitol of Raleigh.
