Charlotte may look like a brand-new city, but there’s a rich history at every turn. Its roots run deep in the Old South, way back before the American Revolution. As the New South dawned after the Civil War, Charlotte took off – first as a railroad junction and then as a cotton mill hub.
Early history. The city's namesake, Queen Charlotte of Great Britain and Ireland, c. 1779. The Catawba Indians were the first known historic tribe to settle Mecklenburg County in the Charlotte area and were first recorded around 1567, according to Spanish records.

Located in the new county of Mecklenburg along the Catawba River in south central North Carolina, Charlotte became known as the “Queen City.” English-Irish immigrants came upon the area while traveling on the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia.
