It was interrupted in 1649 by the establishment of the Commonwealth but was restored in 1660. It ended in 1714, when the British crown passed to the house of Hanover.

James Scott, Duke of Monmouth, was the illegitimate son of Charles II and Lucy Walter, daughter of William Walter of Pembrokeshire. He had been a supporter of the Exclusionists in the late 1670s. After Charles ’s sudden death on 6 February 1685, Monmouth began plotting once again with exiled British dissidents.
