Kaiser Wilhelm I died in Berlin on 9 March 1888, and Prince Wilhelm's father ascended the throne as Frederick III. He was already experiencing an incurable throat cancer and spent all 99 days of his reign fighting the disease before dying.

Kaiser Wilhelm II's life in exile came to an end with his death on June 4, 1941, at the age of 82. His passing went largely unnoticed amidst the turmoil of World War II. Wilhelm was buried in a mausoleum on the grounds of Huis Doorn, as his request to be buried in Germany could not be fulfilled due to the ongoing conflict of WWII.
In the early 1930s, Wilhelm II apparently hoped that the successes of the Nazi Party would stimulate interest in a restoration of the monarchy, with Crown Prince Wilhelm's son as the fourth Kaiser. After Crown Prince Wilhelm joined Der Stahlhelm , which merged in 1931 into the Harzburg Front , Adolf Hitler visited him at Cecilienhof in 1926, 1933 (on the " Day of Potsdam ") and 1935.
