“How hard is it to learn Mandarin Chinese?” One of the most common beliefs about Mandarin Chinese is that it’s difficult to learn. It’s not surprising to see why. The Chinese writing system utilizes characters to represent entire words, and these characters are strikingly different from phonetic scripts (alphabets).
Something I haven't seen mentioned yet is that you need to learn every word in mandarin from scratch. What I mean is there are essentially no cognates between English and Mandarin like there are in French and Spanish, so your ability to acquire new vocab will be at a much slower rate.

Study basic Mandarin grammar and use the Pinyin phonetic system to learn pronunciation. Practice reading and writing Chinese characters as well.
