Working at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, Thomson demonstrated through his experiments with cathode rays that atoms are not indivisible as previously thought, but contain smaller particles.

His work opened the field of subatomic physics to experimental investigation and helped unravel the inner workings of the atom. He developed the "plum pudding" model of the atom.
