Daughter of Henry VII of England, she married James IV of Scotland in 1503, became regent in 1513 on James' death at the Battle of Flodden Field. Her fourth son would become James V of Scotland. Eight of Lyndsay’s earliest surviving poems were written for the king and are set at his court.

Edward IV was constantly at odds with the Lancastrians and his own councillors after his marriage to Elizabeth Woodville , with a brief return to power for Henry VI.

By the latter’s will, the guardian of the new king and interim ruler of the realm was to be his mother Margaret, who was also the sister of Henry VIII.
